Creative Writing Classes For Adults & Teens

WELCOME TO THE WRITERS WORKSHOP OF NANTUCKET

OUR STORY

Founded by Nina Wolpow and Nell Schwed, graduates of Columbia University's MFA Fiction program, the Writers Workshop of Nantucket seeks to bring creative writing opportunities to the Island. We offer two summer sessions for adults and teen writers to cultivate a passion for the written word.

WHAT WE ENVISION

The Writers Workshop of Nantucket is a creative writing program for adults and teenagers (13-18). The Workshop gives promising students the opportunity to share their writing with teachers and peers, receive constructive critique, participate in writing exercises and activities, and explore the island of Nantucket through its literary history.

Classes for teens will be held once a week on Saturday afternoons for the months of July and August. They will be a combination of seminar and workshop. Adult classes will be held one evening a week on Thursdays for the months of July and August.

At the conclusion of our sessions we hope to have a party and do a public reading of students' work.

SEMINAR

In order to write, one must read. Read widely and deeply and critically. By examining published works, we will teach our students important craft elements and how to improve our own work by following others' examples. This class is most similar to an English course, but we will also engage in writing exercises to explore various elements of craft (e.g. plot, perspective, dialogue, style and voice) and expand these exercises into longer works.

WORKSHOP

The workshop operates like a dialogue, a conversation between the writer, their peers, and the instructor. As a group, we will guide the writer to rework their submission to its greatest potential. Our workshop philosophy is most concerned with the constructive criticism the writer receives—how they can improve; where the work shines and where it needs more attention—but in an atmosphere of trust and respect for the artistic process.
